If you’ve ever seen Napoleon Dynamite, then you’ve likely heard of a Liger. The breed which is a cross between a male lion and a female tiger, is the largest known feline species in existence. However, it’s not one that you’re likely to find in the wild as male lions and female tigers are unlikely to mate on their own.

While ligers sound like mythical fairytale creatures and are almost as rare, they do occur in captivity, typically by accident. They’re said to have the athleticism of tigers while also being very social creatures like lions. They’re not to be confused with the Tigon, which is a hybrid of a male tiger and female lion.
